My research interests include molecular biology, microbiology, and genetics. This includes DNA sequencing that encompasses Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) projects, plus bacterial, viral and plant and animal genomic sequencing, annotation and analysis.
I have 15 years experience in this particular field, and I have managed numerous projects. I coordinated the microbial sequencing projects at the Advanced Center for Genome Technology at the University of Oklahoma. Since coming to the Genome sequencing Center, I have been Group Leader of Darwin EST Projects, 1999-2003. The Genome Sequencing Center has contributed over 3 million EST sequences to the dbEST division of GenBank. In addition, I have supervised Small Projects, in which I directed the sequencing, finishing and annotation of smaller genomes (those less than 100 Mb). (
Salmonella typhimurium,
Salmonella Paratyphi A,
maize mitochondria,
Schmidtea mediterrania (planarian) and
Drosophila yakuba and
simulans).
Most recently (2003-present), I serve as an Assistant Director of the GSC, Washington University School of Medicine, responsible for projects that include all non-vertebrate genomes. In that capacity, I participate in the intake of genome sequencing requests, assist with the team-based selection process for the genome sequencing of various species, draft sequencing plans for those organisms assigned by the NHGRI, and engage in the writing of grant proposals. I also oversee the progress of each accepted sequencing project and interact with the collaborators in those projects.
I have an active interest in comparative genomics: the analysis and comparison of genomes from different species, to gain a better understanding of how species have evolved, as well as the biochemical, genetic, metabolic, and physiological pathways involved. This will be one of the keys that will aid in unlocking the "mysteries" of biological systems.
